There are differences, truly, between the old community and the new. In GCG, we have adapted a more relaxed mindset. The biggest change is our new, improved rules on attire. In GCG, if you arrive in biker clothes or a mini skirt, you are STILL welcome to explore. True, we would rather see you in medieval attire and there is tons of free stuff at our welcome center, located in River City, the entry point to our community. Observer tags are also available. However, we will embrace you and welcome you no matter how you dress. In mundane attire, you will not be able to participate in any of the ongoing role plays you may happen upon, but you are welcome to observe.
What race do you want to be? We have a limited amount of pre-approved races - Elf, Dwarf, Fairy (many kinds), Human, Hobbit, Halfling, Merfolk. Now, there are many other races we will consider such as Drow and Dragon. If you wish a race not on our pre-approved list, we need to know you have the experience to play such a role. Otherwise, by approving it, I would be setting your character up to fail and I won't do that. So do some research on your character. Take your time to make a decision you will want to live with because just as in real life, there is no race changing.
Magic! Magic is mostly relegated to those in guilds. Currently, we have one active guild, Druids. With time and experience, we hope to create other guilds - Clerics, Rangers, Mages etc. However, we do not merely put tags over our heads and say, "Voila, I am a Warrior (or a Cleric)" anymore than we would in real life take the title of doctor or lawyer without training. Those of us in such roles trained extensively in SL or IW in various role play communities.
What your character will have is the innate gifts of his or her chosen race. We strive not to allow any character to be over powered so, yes, we may seem a bit controlling in what you can or cannot do. Want to fly? Choose to be a fairy, not a human or an elf. And, yes, you could make a viable argument that an elf can fly; but, there again, you need to do some research.
Role play is in its simplest playing a part. Often I hear folks say, "I am curious, I have always wanted to try it, but I am shy or nervous or afraid I will make a mistake." Well, be shy or nervous no more. For, we offer a core group of experienced role players who want to help you in your journey. We have classes on role play basics and etiquette. We will help you every step of the way.
We are loosely based on LoTR and D&D. So much of your character can be learned by watching movies such as Lord of the Rings or books on Fairies and Elves. Visit us soon - whether just to wander our beautiful lands or to be a part of the role play. Huzzah!!
