Fiesty sat at her desk, writing a heartfelt letter of commiseration to Winter Silversmith. She wished she or another Druid had been there. They could have ameliorated the damage with the water spirit they commanded. But the loss was done and all she could do was send some of her boys to help rebuild his farm.
Fiesty at Work |
Her thoughts turned to the day’s work, making a truth powder for the gypsy Kathena. She had made truth powder back at the island. The mages had taught her how and she was certain of the ingredients. Yet, that was quite a few years ago and she felt she should test it out before giving it out. Who should she try it on? The idea of giving it to her nephew Copper made her wince. She really did not want to know that much about her nephew.
The next possible person to try it on was her assistant, Maisie Boffin. The young girl was a stalwart help for her these days. Fiesty called her in and explained the circumstances, and that the powder was safe. Maisie readily agreed. Fiesty administered a diluted version of the powder in a nice chamomile tea and only asked the most innocuous of questions. What is the name of your father, your mother? Where do you live? Maisie seemed dreamlike and agreeable. Fiesty asked her what her mother served the family for Highday dinner, thinking it would not be a challenging question and was pulled up short by Maisie’s answer. “ Me mom feeds us Chops and taters most Highdays, but when she be mad at Pa she serves us liver and a side o spinach.”
Fiesty felt that the stronger power would be good enough to send to Kathena, so she sent for the Scouts. The boys took the potion off to Kathena in the River Lands.
Then she sent dear Maisie to sleep on her couch and made a nice cooling tea for her eventual awakening. Fiesty counted out some gold coins for the girl when she awoke and thanked the Earth Spirit for such a jewel as Maisie.
